Population-level dynamics of de novo genes

Piero Foncerrada Elizondo
I am Piero Foncerrada. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Agro-genomics Science from the Escuela Nacional de Estudios Superiores (ENES) León, at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). During my undergraduate studies, I completed a one‑year research stay at the Desert Botanical Garden in collaboration with Arizona State University (ASU), where I worked on population genomics and the evolutionary demographic history of the saguaro cactus (Carnegiea gigantea).
I am currently a Master’s student in Integrative Biology at Cinvestav Unidad Irapuato, under the supervision of Dr. Josue Barrera‑Redondo. My research focuses on the population‑level dynamics of de novo genes in the model brown alga Ectocarpus sp. 7. Using a wide range of genomic analysis tools – with an emphasis on whole‑genome sequencing technologies – I aim to uncover the mechanisms by which new genes originate at a population scale and how these processes shape speciation and evolutionary adaptation.
I am supported by a SECIHTI master’s scholarship.
